What if the ocean is the world’s largest instrument?

During the residency in Grundarfhordur, I lived in an appartment by the harbour. At night, I fotographed my reflection in the windows of my room. Outside are buildings, light from other people’s lives. What i hear is a reflection of understanding history, living the best I can along with my surroundings, but also understanding that I am a small piece in a bigger play, how the ocean connects us all. My voice is but a small tune. But it is there. Night in Grundarfjordur.

Research and field-work

NIGHT IN GRUNDARFJORDUR

Literature

What if the ocean is the world’s biggest instrument? The Icelandic author, Jon Kalman Stefansson, asks this question in «Summerlight, then comes the night». This question has been the base of my research the whole of 2022, and is prolongued in Grundarfjordur. What would I hear in my window at night? What is the reflection? What is the sound of snow on my window?

Local history

In the library of Grundarfjordur, with the great help from Sunna Njålsdottir, I have read and studied the work Sea-women of Iceland, by Margret Willson. What is life for women in Iceland? How is my own familiy history connected to the hardship of everyday life in Iceland?

Life in the ocean

In the depths of the ocean swims the Greenland shark. It has deeply fascinated me how this animal lives, and its lifespan of 500 years. What would the shark say to us if it could talk?

Folk-music and language

Would it be possible for me to learn an Icelandic Lullaby when in Iceland? Learning the words, the diphtongs and the accent? In my act in Reykjavik, I will perform bits from the Icelandic folk-tune Kveldsvise.

All these perspectives are reflections from a window from the nights in Grundarfjordur:

NIGHTS IN GRUNDARFJORDUR.

One-act play for physical theatre

When I return to Norway, NIGHT IN GRUNDARFJORDUR, will be impelmented into a larger body of work. That is the voice of the PILGRIM.

Thank you for reading and listening. Welcome to Gallery 105 Artak in Reykjavik.
